September 25, 2005 - Outside
Dancing outside is nice. Dancing on cement is not.
September 24, 2005 - Country
It was a great dance at the Whirlaways last night. Buddy Weaver was calling. He is definitely my favorite caller. Last night he was playing mostly all country music, some old and some newer songs, but still country. I don't know why people want to take the country out of square dance. Country music is bigger than ever now, even with the young kids, and it has a great rhythm for dancing.
Tonight we're dancing with the Alpine Squares at the Back Country SDA Fourth Quarter Dance with David Mee calling. He'll also be calling at the Rustlers' New Year's dance we're going to.
September 22, 2005 - New Class
While we were cleaning up at the end of class last night, Ray casually said to Lou (the new class coordinator), "I hate to be a stickler, but am I going to teach this whole class this year for free?" Lou, surprised and embarrassed, said, "Oh, am I supposed to be paying you? Nobody told me. They just handed me a box of stuff. Nobody told me what to do." We were all laughing. I guess the Wranglers may have a comunications problem.
At least this class looks more promising than the last two. Everyone seems pretty optimistic. There were 22 there last night, plus several "angels." It was nice to see John and Janet back again. (They had to drop out of the last class for medical reasons.) Lou and Suzy are very enthusiastic as the new class coordinators. So, we'll see.
September 20, 2005 - New Web Page
Thanks to Larry, the Palomar Square Dance Association now has a newly designed web site.

September 19, 2005 - New Year's Dance
Pat Carnathan announced that he would be calling at the
Rustlers' New Year's Eve Dance (in Garden Grove). Tim Pepper and David Mee are also calling. We met a couple of people from the Rustlers at the last Jamboree and have been wanting to visit their club some time. This sounds like it will be a really fun dance and what better way is there to ring in the New Year than at a square dance?
But, I didn't think we could go because, of course, we wouldn't want to be out driving late on New Year's Eve.
But then, it occured to me, we are actually paying for an apartment in that area, and since it will be winter break, the kids will probably be here in San Diego. So, since we have a place to stay, we're going to the Rustler's for New Year's Eve. Whoo hoo!
September 17, 2005 - Dancing Double-Time
Round dancing at the Wrangler dance last night, Peter Gomez was cueing. He dances in a very beautiful, smooth ballroom style. Last night he was cuing mostly all waltzes and two steps.
I kind of prefer a country style and I always thought a two-step was supposed to be a lively and fast dance, but he was using incredibly slow music. So I decided to do them double-time. That means you do twice the steps in the same amount of music; a slow two-step, (what we'd call in tap a step ball-change,) would be step-together-step-pause (1-2-3-4,) a double-time two-step would be step-together-step-pause, step-together-step-pause (1-&-2-&-3-&-4-&.) The steps that don't lend themselves well to double-time are still slow enough that extra twirls or flourishes can be added without changing the rhythm of the dance. (After ten years of doing tap choreography, this is easy stuff.)
As I danced by, Peter said, "I don't know how to cue what you're doing."
September 11, 2005 - Square Dancers for Katrina
Tony Oxendine is working to organize a charitable donation to help victims of hurricane Katrina.
By Tony Oxendine -
"It is time for square dancers world wide to unite. Together, we can make a difference. Over the years, square dancers have shown themselves to be some of the most caring people in the world."
"Our goal is to send a check and truckloads of supplies to the affected areas on October 3, 2005. We will be in contact with FEMA to find out exactly where to deliver everything, and to determine what organization(s) to give the monies collected. Our goal is to send at least one semi-truck full of supplies and to hand over a check for ONE MILLION DOLLARS."
"We will be updating the website on a daily basis to keep everyone abreast of our progress. Please check the site often. We need to get the word out quickly to as many square dancers worldwide as we possible can. If you have a website, please post a prominent link to ours on your page. If possible, send this letter out to any friends you have on the internet."

September 10, 2005 - Ready to Dance
We haven't danced for two weeks. We missed both the Wrangler and Whirlaway dances due to an unforseen family problem, and the Ruffles 'n Beaus were dark for Labor Day. I am ready to dance this weekend.
