August 31, 2005 - Incompetence
The good news - The Wrangler class is listed in the What's Happening section of the local paper.
The bad news - Not only is the starting date wrong, but the day of the week is wrong, and the e-mail address for information is wrong.
And, if that is not enough, as I'm ready to distribute the pile of class flyers I have, I notice that the date on these is wrong, too.
How many did they print? And how many have already been distributed? I don't know.
August 26, 2005 - Dance Map
Larry has been working on a map of all the dance locations in San Diego. So here it is; Places to Square Dance, Round Dance, or Clog in San Diego County. --- SDCSD Dance Map
August 23, 2005 - Traveling
Me - "We have some friends who are talking about buying a motorhome and traveling all over, going to all the square dance festivals."
Kimberly - "Oh, I want to do that. That sounds like so much fun, well . . . I mean, except for the square dance part. I just want to do the traveling part."
August 22, 2005 - Good Dance
Last weekend's 3rd Saturday Round-Up was a really fun dance. Marshall Flippo from Texas was calling. It was the first time we've danced to him. I really liked his calling, he's a lot of fun. He has some interesting choreography and his mainstream tips were just as much fun as the plus tips. This was one of the best dances we've been to in a long time.
August 8, 2005 - Lyrics
It's the little things that drive you crazy.
Why is it that none of the square dance callers know the correct lyrics to the song "City of New Orleans?" At first I thought it was just Ray because he's always forgetting the words to the songs. But no, Weaver, Randall, Shukayr, Carnathan, every single one of them sing the wrong lyrics.
Good morning America how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.
Chorus from "City of New Orleans" - words and music by Steve Goodman (1970)
The song was recorded by Arlo Guthrie in 1972 on the "Hobo's Lullaby" album and later released as a single. It became a big hit and was also recorded by John Denver, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson.
They all got the lyrics right.
July 31, 2005 - Luau
Yesterday was the Ruffles 'n Beaus Sheriff's Picnic party. It was fun having a chance to visit and get to know people a little better. We are starting to feel more a part of the group now.
Tonight is the Luau Party Night dance. It should be fun.

July 18, 2005 - Ruffles 'n Beaus
We are now officially members of the Ruffles 'n Beaus Square Dance Club. We've been dancing with them for about five months now and we're still attending their All-Position-DBD Plus class, as well. Dancing to Pat is getting much easier and, though the R&Bs are slow to warm to new people and not terribly friendly to visitors, everyone has been very nice to us. They're just very protective of keeping their club dances at a high level so, I guess in that regard, a little snobbish. But they are enthusiastic dancers and a fun club to dance with.
July 15, 2005 - Tenderfoot 3
The Wrangler Tenderfoot Dances have been cancelled. We didn't even have a full square last night. So sad.
July 8, 2005 - Tenderfoot Dances 2
Oh dear, it looks as though the Tenderfoot Dances are doomed. We only had one square last night (one couple from our grads, two couples from the Whirlaways, and three Wrangler couples, incuding us). We can't afford to pay for the room, let alone the caller, with that. This kind of irritates me. I think we should have at least two squares of Wranglers, if not more, attending the dances - if, for no other reason, just to show support for the club. We are sponsoring these dances, after all. If the Wranglers won't even come, how welcome does that make the new and visiting dancers feel?
July 4, 2005 - Club Drawing
We usually dance with the Ruffles 'n Beaus on Sundays. Last night their regular caller, Pat Carnathan, wasn't there, so Andy Allemeo was calling. At the end of the dance they always draw the name of a club member, who then wins a cash prize if they are present. When the name was drawn, Andy looked at it and said, "Okay, I am not kidding, the name drawn is Pat Carnathan."
July 1, 2005 - Tenderfoot Dances
Our first Tenderfoot Dance was June 30th. This dance offers a good opportunity for new dancers to get "floor time" and increase their speed before dancing at plus dances.
We had a little over two squares. Four of our eight new student graduates came, four Whirlaways attended, and the rest were Wranglers. However, since the room rent has been increased, we really need to have at least three squares to be able to continue the dances.
Ray called a good dance. Hopefully we will be able to increase the attendance in the next couple weeks.
